Meeting in Auburn at Calvary Chapel School
 
Reader’s Theatre: grades 3-6, 1hr/wk, Year Long, $170 per semester
Class time will be spent actively reading through scripted children’s literature with choral readings in which all students read a passage in unison and round-robin readings in which students take turns reading out loud.  Reader's Theater has been found to be effective in building reading fluency, boosting listening and speaking skills, and promoting cooperative interaction with peers. Reluctant readers are often transformed. The final class for each unit will be student presentations. Materials will be provided. Audio and video podcasts are used to help students do their best.
 
Creative Oral Presentations: grades 3-6, 1hr/wk, YL, $170 per semester
The focus of this class is to practice and strengthen memorization skills and oral recitation through the use of poetry, original speeches, dramatic interpretation, and classic speeches.  Etiquette such as introductions and conversation starters will be incorporated through skits, and group communication games. The final class for each unit will be student presentations. Class materials will be provided.

Micecraft For Communication: grades 3-6, 1 hr/wk, Year Long, $170 per semester

Minecraft is a global phenomenon; a place where kids engineer complex machines, create civilizations, and make art. It’s a world of trial and error and constant discovery. Minecraft encourages kids to tinker, to break things and then fix them.

Minecraft for Communication and Minecraft for Problem Solving will use Minecraft activities and student interest and knowledge as catalysts to practice  problem solving  and communication skills.

History Speaks: Medieval Period (Fall 2016): grades 6-8, 1hr/wk, Year Long, $190/semester

History Speaks: Renaissance Period (Spring 2017)  

A variety of activities and teaching methods will be used to introduce life in the Middle Ages and during the Renaissance.  Many lessons in these units focus on an interactive approach to learning.  Students will be engaged in a variety of activities including the use of videos, games, creative individual writing, projects, and presentations.  Co-operative learning and active participation in group activities, class discussions, and presentations will also be emphasized throughout these units to create a meaningful learning experience.

Homework is required as we work our way through books that help capture the times and places we will be studying.  

History Speaks courses will be offered in alternating years. Medeival/Renaissance in  2016 and Ancient (Egypt-Greece-Rome) in 2017.

Historry Speaks can be taken in any order.


Read Write Speak: Grades 6-8, 1hr/wk, Year Long, $260/semester
This full Language Arts course will move your student forward in all of the components of mastering the English Language. Many would call it an integrated and  holistic approach.

We will enjoy the benefits of a book club, a writer’s club, grammar lessons, and even learn the components of and practice our communication skills.

Homework will be required as we read through our books each semester, write paragraphs, learn the discipline of daily grammar drills and get comfortable learning to work  with classmates.

 

Math Matters: Grades 6-8, 1hr/wk, Year Long, $190/semester
Math is not magic, though it is amazing. Math is a daily discipline. If you are looking for accountability and teaching help to move forward in the math curriculum of your choice then this is the class for you.

Class time will be spent using a variety of teaching strategies to help students understand the fundamentals found in Saxon Math 76. These concepts will apply in whatever math program your student is using. Students should gain a strong understanding of these concepts to help them succeed in high school math courses.

Parents will be required to make a contract with their students about their goals for math for the school year. Students will be held accountable to progress satisfactorily in meeting these goals. 

The purpose of this class is to help students and parents be diligent in pursuing their math studies by doing them daily

 
Speech Smarts(A):  grades 7-12, YL, $210 per semester
Class time will be spent in actively learning communication skills and preparing speeches. Students will learn four different types of speeches throughout the year: impromptu, original oratory, dramatic interp and broadcasting. The final class for each unit will be student presentations. Class materials will be provided. Speech Smarts A and B can be taken in any order.
 
Current Events: grades 7-9, YL, $190 per semester
Current Events is a key component of Social Studies for the middle school years. This class focuses on increasing student knowledge and understanding of daily news events, helping them to understand the importance of people, events, and issues in the world. Students will follow domestic and international current events topics. Students will practice basic public speaking skills and be engaged regularly in discussion and  oral presentations during class time. No text required.
 
Informal Logic and Argumentation: grades 7-9, $190 per semester
This course will focus primarily on informal logic, the art of reasoning well. We will be learning to analyze arguments and spot logical fallacies using games, activities and stories in class. Students will have opportunity to practice being fallacy detectives in fun, yet structured rounds of debate. ( Should blue M&M’s become a classic color?) Excellent preparation for high school speech and debate. 
 

Our US Constitution: grades 7-9, 1 hr/wk, $190 per semester

The US Constitution is key to understanding our society and thus a key component of Social Studies for the middle school years. It is a straightforward and concise document that directs our everyday lives. Class time will be spent increasing student knowledge and understanding of the history, content and principles of the Constitution. Students will be engaged in class discussion, projects and presentations. 


 
US Government: grades 10-12, 2hr/wk, $260 per semester (Fall)
One semester course exploring the foundations of American government dedicated to the high school student with understanding and background in American History. Students will examine the components and principles of American government, constitutional freedoms and citizen responsibilities, political systems and public policies. Students will be engaged regularly in discussion and  oral presentations during class time. Text TBD.

Volleyball: grades 5-12, 1 hr/wk, $100 per semester - check schedule for ages

Tutoring Available:
Writing Project Tutoring: grades 4-12, $20-$40 per hour
Start to finish assistance provided to students working on writing assignments.  We work side- by-side, step-by-step on planning the project, researching, outlining, using graphics and final editing. The student will produce a successful writing project.
 
Side-by-Side Tutoring: all grades $20-$40 per hour
We walk through coursework in any subject(s) with the student. Sometimes parents need a helping hand to progress through course materials. We can assist with choosing materials, setting goals,  detailed planning and accountability in addition to tutoring through coursework. We have patience, experience and success with students with a variety of learning styles, strengths and challenges.
